Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process plants undergo to
make food and store it in sugar bonds. This only happens with plants because they have a structure in their cells called chloroplasts. These chloroplasts contain a substance called chlorophyll, which is vital in the process of photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is a green pigment that is inside of the chloroplasts. The product of this process is oxygen, which we breathe in believe it or not, and sugar. Some algae also undergo photosynthesis too. The plants only need sunlight, CO2,and H2O to make sugar. Nearly all of the photosynthesis takes place in the leaves of the plants. Very little occurs in the stem.

The sections of the leaf include the upper and lower epidermis, the mesophyll, the vascular bundles, and the stomata. Both epidermises do not have any chloroplasts, which means that no photosynthesis will take place in those sections ever. They protect the leaf more than anything else. The stomata’s are holes for air exchange. They let carbon dioxide in and let oxygen out. Oxygen is the “waste” of photosynthesis which is why it is released through the stomata. The mesophyll cells contain chloroplasts so that is where photosynthesis occurs within the plant.
The sugar that is created through
photosynthesis allows the plant to store the food within its cells. This is the source of energy for all life on Earth. The herbivores consume the plants, which transfers the energy from the sugar into the consumer. Then when a carnivore consumes the first animal, it takes in the energy that the first animal had, which came from the plants. Photosynthesis is vital for the oxygen level in the atmosphere. It takes the carbon dioxide in the air, along with water and sunlight, and creates glucose and oxygen. Thanks photosynthesis!
